  3. That best little weather radio you can have! Review by David
    Value

I love it! Its better than having to use my old weather radio/fm/am alarm clock thing, that I just had to fix the antenna on it my self, and this does the trick! I can take it wherever I want to travel, and all I need to do is enter the county code! Very nice, just wish my cheap-o batteries would last longer so I could use it more! (Posted on 7/10/13)

  4. Very pleasantly surprised! Review by WeatherGeekTammy

This radio was SUPER EASY to set up. My 7 year old helped me do it. I just bought it today and there are storms in my area tonight. It has a small light that indicates if there's a watch, or warning current... and you can keep it silent if you want, where it will only sound if there's a warning... so you can go to bed and not have to worry if there is a "high wind watch" or anything.... OR if you want it to sound when there is a watch or warning, you can. I have waited for years to get the right weather radio for me... and I've found it! (Posted on 6/13/13)

  5. The best of several weather radios I've tried! Review by TheRealElbadoo
    Value

I've tried all sorts of weather alert radios over the years and have learned to hate them with a passion. They /all/ have user design problems I haven't been able to ignore: loud beeping keys that you can't quiet, misspellings on the display ("tornato alert"? really?), AC adapters that disable the batteries so the radio turns off when the power is out, and heart-attack-inducing alarms that sound off at FULL SCREAMING VOLUME - for a thunderstorm watch. Seriously? The people who design these things obviously don't actually take them home and use them for a month or they'd never release a product like that.
This one is different. Oh, the menu-based user interface is still a bit of a pain to navigate, and I don't especially like the always-on (when you have it on its powered stand, which is the way you'd generally use it at home) blue display backlight. Other than that, they've generally done things right with this radio.
The big difference here is that you can customize what levels will sound off the alarm. Don't need to hear an alert for a simple thunderstorm watch? You can disable it. You'll still see a very noticeable light indicator (there are three of them: advisory, watch, and warning), but you don't have to be woken up to hear that it's going to rain this morning. Required weekly test? Nope; don't want to hear it. My only complaint with the whole process of setting it up is that there are a LOT of classes of alerts you might get, and going through the list takes a while. Wow, I never thought of all the ways I can can die: chemical spills, dust storms, zombie attacks, etc.
All-in-all I've been very happy with this. I'm writing this because a co-worker asked me about it today when the one in my office went off because of an evacuation alert due to a chemical spill from a train derailment. This got me to thinking how much I like this one... and as a matter of fact I'm going to go buy another as a replacement for the crummy one I have at my house. (Posted on 6/13/13)

  9. Simple to use, but cannot turn it off Review by hcubed
    Value

I got this for evacuation during hurricane season - I probably could have found a way to use the home-based Midland radio in the car, but the portability with SAME capability really sold it.

The only "con" would be the lack of an on/off switch. I really don't need it 24/7 while I'm traveling, but if I pull into a rest area I can set the SAME for that area (already have a listing of the counties along the route), and feel safer.

I either let it run for the entire trip, going through several SAME areas, or re-load batteries when I pull off.

As another review said, if you let the batteries go till they're out, then changing the batteries the radio will lose some of it's settings - it remembers SAME codes, but the time, date are lost.

Again, a simple on/off switch could have helped. (Posted on 8/12/12)

  10. Good Wx Radio Review by Dan
    Value

I bought 3 of these for my house and family's houses. We live in a tri-state area and the S.A.M.E. technology does a great job of filtering alerts that are not applicable to my county.

My only minor complaint/suggestion is the lack of a rechargeable battery option. Currently placing the unit in the base station only by-passes the alkaline battery and if you forget to place the unit back in the base station it will drain your alkaline batteries and they'll have to be replaced. 11. Easy setup Review by Rick
    Value

Setup was really easy, didn't even use the manual (although I did have to look up the FIPS code and freq online). The OS and Midland radios are more complicated, this seems intuitive. I also see it can 'scan' to get the strongest signal... that will work great when traveling. I like the blue backlight and the advisory/watch/warning colors are a nice touch. It doesn't charge batteries, but none of my other radios do either. Seems fairly solid for an inexpensive radio. (Posted on 5/3/12)

  12. Worth it Review by tornadotom
    Value

NICE radio for the money! Ease of use is excellent. Features seem really good. I haven't had an alert for my area today so can't talk about the warning aspect of the radio yet.....

....Otherwise, so far I'm very happy with the radio and it is perfect in every way for my needs. Great value.

  13. Good little radio Review by Nate
    Value

I will follow this up with a video of the weekly test when I have the time to trim the video file down in size.

Please also understand that I am cross-posting this review on the various versions of this same radio as they have different listings that only very in color.

    PROs:
    - Radio uses SAME codes to limit the alerts that you will receive to only the counties you want to hear alerts for.
    - I was able to witness the radio activate for the weekly test today when I was home sick from work
    - Radio emitted a loud tone prior to the test message, the tone is loud enough to wake you if it is in the same room as you
    - Tone ended with enough time to hear the entire test message
    - The radio recognized the end of alert signals and turned itself back off when the alert was complete. Some radio's do NOT do this and instead operate on a timer, this is an issue for two reasons:
    - It's annoying to continue hearing broadcasts in the middle of the night if the alert is not something you want to wake for
    - Sometimes messages can take more time than the radio's remain on for (i.e. warnings that cover many counties)
    - As stated above, this radio does not have these issues.
    - The radio remained in the "Advisory" status until the alert end time was reached, the radio itself does not continue to talk but it still has the "Advisory" light and continues to scroll what the alert is on the screen (i.e. Required monthly test until 1119am) until the end time.
    - Is portable, very easy to carry around with you if needed --- Runs on standard AAA batteries (3) . I am using Eneloop cells in the radio as I tend to carry it around with me if I am out and about on bad weather days. Batteries will last a few days of use (listening to the weather on occasion, in standby most of the time). Note that the radio does not charge batteries when in the dock, it just does not use battery power when docked.
    - You can select which alerts you want to hear, with the exception of WARNINGs... There is no way to turn off warnings on this radio (I believe they are not allowed to have this functionality)

    CONs:
    - My belt clip broke after only 2 battery changes, the latch is quite weak and it no longer latches into the radio ... This is not a huge issue for me, but could be for some
    - When changing the batteries the radio will loose some of it's settings, it remembers FIPS (SAME) codes, however you will have to reset the time and date any time you change the batteries. The time and date is important for the automated warning functions in the radio.

    Other notes:
    - The radio will keep the past 4 alerts in memory, and you can look at them... The weekly test is NOT stored in memory, so the only way to really determine if the radio is working properly is to be around when the weekly test takes place, or get an actual alert.

  14. Excellent+ Review by On_A_Journey
    Value

I have the portable radio + home dock/weather station combo.

For once... a user manual easy to use. Very straightforward, no nonsense. The entire setup (including local area FIPS code) was done quickly. Use the Quick Setup on the portable radio. Also, keep the backlight on low illumination, and set your portable radio to Auto On.

I had one issue... an "ID10T" error (that means "IDIOT" if you haven't seen it before) that was entirely my fault. After installing the batteries in the portable radio, the Low Battery strength indicator was on. The batteries were freshly bought, so I was at a loss initially. This situation annoyed me because when I took the radio out of the dock, it went blank... what good is a portable radio with no power?? I was going to replace the batteries, thinking I had a bad batch. it was then that I discovered my blunder. I had inadvertently reversed one of the batteries in its slot, putting the + pole where the - pole should have been.

Hey... don't laugh. It is easy to do!

Upon correcting the polarity (reversing the position of the battery in the slot), all was well.

Have a blessed day, everyone... (Posted on 3/6/12)

  15. This NOAA Radio Saved a lot of people's Lives last night Review by Tnemtiv32
    Value

I bought this radio at Wal-Mart last night due to all the sever sotrms coming through East Tennessee last night. I was assiting with a shelter here in Greene County. TN and we had approx 250 people in the shelter and the radio went off for a Tornado Warning, we were able to get all 250 people in the basement within a 5 minute time frame and every one was safe. This little radio saved a lot of lives last night and after seeing it in action a lot of the people at the shelter said they were going to buy one of them. (Posted on 3/3/12)

  17. Saved my car from hail damage!!! Review by Jerry
    Value

I really like my NOAA radio. It's a great product. I can get the local forecast anytime I want it by putting the setting to the correct spot. I personally prefer the setting at storm alert so it only goes off when a storm is in the area. Just the other day it went off and said there were thunderstorms with high winds and hail so I put my car in the garage before it started storming and was glad I did because it sure did hail. 18. Worked from the Rockies mountain tops Review by Jim Samson
    Value

I absolutely recommend this weather radio without hesitation. Tested it in the Rockies on my sons Boyscout hiking trip - worked exactly as I expected it to, even up on the mountain tops. Highly recommended for any camping/hiking expedition. (Posted on 8/1/11)

  19. Easy setup, relevant weather for my county. Review by Harry W.
    Value

This is my 3rd weather alert radio. The others I own all tell me weather for the surrounding counties, which really aren't relevant for the weather in my actual location. This radio, on the other hand, does exactly what I want it to do - tells me the weather alerts for MY county, so when it goes off I know it's not a false alarm. It's relatively light, easy to carry, docking station is great for "at home" use. (Posted on 8/1/11)

  20. NOAA radio helps me feel prepared & know what to expect with the weather Review by Susan
    Value

This little radio has made me feel much more secure and prepared with what's been going on with the crazy weather this summer. Floods, lightening storms, tornados - I feel like my family is world's safer because we have access to emergency info when we need it most, especially when there's a power outage. The alert alarm is loud enough to wake us up in the middle of the night, and it automatically sounds when there are emergency warnings. When that alarm sounds I know I need to bring my lawn furniture inside! This product is a must have, I'm buying one for my elderly parents next. (Posted on 8/1/11)
