13-inch Glass Galileo Thermometer

Quick Overview

The 13" glass Galileo thermometer combines style and functionality as a beautiful accent piece for any home or office. Not only does it measure indoor temperature, it is a work of beauty and art. Makes a great gift item and lasting conversation piece!

Galileo Galilei, the pioneer of modern astronomy and physics, (1564-1642), discovered that liquids change density as the temperature increases or decreases. Based on this principle, the colored glass spheres inside the glass Galileo thermometer have been precisely weighted so that they respond to temperature changes. When the temperature rises, the liquid inside the Galileo thermometer becomes less dense and the colored spheres floating inside will sink towards the bottom. When the temperature of the room cools, the process is reversed and the spheres will rise from the bottom.

  1. Concern review by PamT on 10/17/2013

This product was given to my Mother as a gift and we have enjoyed it. It takes up very little room and ads an artful touch. My concern is that it just broke for some reason at the base and shattered on the side board and the floor. Most of the ingredient was water, however, there is some kind of oil in it as well. I guess this is what help it float the bulbs. I cannot find any information on what is used to tell if there should be any concerns. I'm sure it has no mercury, but the smell from the oil is heavy and smells funny. Anyone have any ideas what they use in them? Aside from the breakage, we love the product.

  2. Bought Two review by cbjeep on 6/5/2013

I bought two of these, the 20 inch one and the 13 inch one. I have always wanted one. I put the big on in my house and gave the smaller one to my girlfriend thinking she could put it up out of the reach of her cat. It is a very nice looking thermometer. Stands out in the room. It also works great. They take care packaging their product. It comes in Styrofoam which is then wrapped in plastic inside the box. The Styrofoam is taped all the way around to keep it from coming loose.

  3. Beautiful thermometer review by Pam on 2/9/2013

Received this as a prize in the Acurite Holiday Giveaway. Great looking thermometer, and will provide a lesson to my daughter on the science of buoyancy.
    Thanks Acurite!

  4. Striking review by DavidF, US on 9/14/2011

Received many compliments on this thermometer, I had to buy another one. Good price - I saw one at another stores at twice the price. Get it and you will see how nice it really is right out of the box.
