This display unit came as part of a dual display weather station I bought from Acurite. I've had it for almost a month and in general I'm happy with it. My only complaint is the display has a lot of information crammed on the face that I think doesn't really need to be there. This can make it not as easy to read as the color display unit that came with the weather station. However I soon learned to look past the clutter and focus on the parts I am interested in. The back light can be turned off and on with a single touch. Since I have this unit in our bedroom this is a handy feature. I decided to add a smartHub instead of using the PC Connect feature.
I chose this display for it's monochrome simplicity, PC Connect feature, and attractive appearance.
But most importantly, my priority is the PC Connect feature. I wanted to use the feature to help update a high-security flash-based personal remote website every 15 minutes through 3rd party servers without using FTP, or HTTP encoded links, or cross-site scripting. Using the PC Connect feature (combined with homemade batch scripts) is currently the only way of doing it. I have succeeded in this task.
This display is doing great for what I wanted it for.
However, if other users decide to tinker with a CSV-based streaming project like mine, then they'll probably discover the AcuRite Connect software has a quirky personality of it's own. You'll find the need to write additional scripts to help work around a few issues like synchronized timing and occasional CSV log integrity disruption. Let's face it, AcuRite had no idea somebody like me would do something like this, but I did! See, what happened was, somebody told me it couldn't be done. Proved them wrong! Na Na Na.
Although it's an older model, it still get's the job done. It does everything I'm used to seeing the AcuRite systems doing, plus a smart weather ticker, plus a PC connection for log downloading, plus live streaming. It's currently sending data to 3 different websites!
But, I wish the AcuRite Connect software would include the weather ticker log. There's useful information on the ticker which is not available in the CSV log.
Also FYI, there has been an update with the AcuRite Connect software. There's no longer a 12 minute lag in the CSV log. It's only a 4 minute lag now between the last record and the file timestamp. The improvement helps make the CSV log more useful now, but why can't the time on the last record match the time of the file's timestamp? ... The mystery continues...
I received this unit under warranty replacement as the first one would not download data to my computer. After performing some requested trouble isolation tests, the company promptly sent me a new replacement display. The new display has been installed and functioning perfectly. No more problems.
The unit itself works well. However, the usability is somewhat lacking. Touch screen is extremely "touchy" (i.e., sometimes it works, sometimes it just sits there and then all of a sudden begins scrolling through the option). Also, the contrast (especially the "ticker") is very poor. Very hard to read ticker.
I purchased an additional screen for my 5 in 1 sensor and when it arrived the set up was totally automatic. The screen immediately interfaced with my sensor and I am now getting weather information in my office. Great product Acurite.
