Bill Veeck once said, “There are only two seasons – winter and baseball.” Those two seasons collided last week, as we received another round of wintry mix just in time for Weather Day at Miller Park with the Milwaukee Brewers and CBS 58. But the sleet, snow, and rain couldn’t stop us from enjoying the Weather Day event and a Brewers’ Win!
CBS 58 Ready Weather Meteorologists kicked off Weather Day by turning Miller Park into a huge classroom with a focus on severe weather and severe weather safety for thousands of local students.
Drew Burgoyne, CBS 58’s Chief Meteorologist, wanted to show the students how powerful tornadic winds can be during a storm. To do that, he stepped into the wind tunnel at Modine Manufacturing in Racine, Wisconsin. This company normally tests the power of engines by applying as much pressure to the vehicle as possible. But this time around, Drew endured the force of Mother Nature! This wind speed experiment gave the students a perspective of being in an EF-1 tornado but without deadly flying debris. Check out the video below!
The students were fascinated by the high wind speeds shown in the video and raced to join us at our Science Fair booth after the severe weather program. Our booth was dedicated to teaching the next generation of weather enthusiasts. From an interactive wind speed experiment and entertaining weather trivia, to a kid-approved selfie station, we could tell the students (and teachers!) had fun learning more about weather at our booth:
We also raffled off AcuRite weather stations at our booth. Five lucky students won a professional weather station for their school! Congratulations again to Mrs. Gregornik at Traver School, Mr. Braun at Good Shepherd Lutheran, Mrs. Ketterhagen at Evergreen Elementary, Mrs. TenPas at Cedar Grove-Belgium Middle School, and Mr. Obrien at Lake Mills Middle School!
We had an awesome time at Weather Day and cannot wait for Weather Day 2019. Thank you to everyone who attended, and to CBS 58 and Milwaukee Brewers for hosting. See you next year!
