Super Blue Blood Moon

AcuRite Team |

This January is extra special because we have a Super Blue Blood Moon on January 31st, 2018 at 8:27am EST. A Blue Moon is defined as the second full moon in one calendar month. The first full moon occurred on January 1st, which was also a Full Wolf Moon - or the first full Moon of the year - and it was a Supermoon because the Moon was at it's closest point to the Earth in it's orbit (perigee).

But this time it is also a Blood Moon, which results during a total lunar eclipse where a full moon lines up with the Earth and Sun. When this happens, the Earth blocks the light from the Sun and allows the Moon to turn a reddish color.

The Moon will be 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual and will have a reddish hue. What an exciting start to the year! While we won't see any full moons in February, we will have another Blue Moon on March 31st!
