Groundhog Day or Super Bowl Sunday? Both!

Meteorologist Kari Strenfel |

Have you been waiting around all winter, wondering when does winter end or when does spring start? Well, whether you like it or not, the Groundhog Day weather prediction results are in!

Early Spring!

We all know the big news of the day reported by Punxsutawney Phil is spring is on the way! The groundhog didn’t see his shadow this morning. Not that there’s any big sporting event planned for today that he might care to predict…?

Tradition has it:

If the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If there is no shadow, then spring is on the way.

For more Groundhog Day history, see our previous post on how GroundHog Day celebration started or check out last year’s results.

Groundhog Day - February 2nd, Phil's Predictions since 1887

But how accurate is he?

NOAA’s most recent study on the groundhog’s predictions for the past 10 years  of historical weather data show that Punxsutawney Phil is right about 40% of the time – and that’s worse odds than just flipping a coin.

What if the Groundhog was at your house?

If you have an AcuRite Atlas™ weather station, report your sun measurements! At sunrise this morning, what was your measured light or UV index? Would Punxsutawney Phil have seen his shadow at your house?  Tell us in the comments below!

Here’s my measured light at sunrise, he would have seen his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter for my area!
