Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day!

Meteorologist Kari Strenfel |

This year Earth Day turns 50 years old! Yep, that's right; it's been 50 years since Earth Day got it's start in 1970. However, Earth Day 2020 will be entirely different from how we imagined the 50th anniversary. Planned corporate volunteer events and neighborhood clean-up parties are getting canceled in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Here at AcuRite, for example, we had a company-wide volunteer day planned, which we've decided to postpone until later in the year. We planned an afternoon of planting trees and pulling invasive weeds at a park a few miles from the PFOC headquarters.

But all of this doesn’t mean you have to ignore the special day! What's stopping you from going out for a walk with a garbage bag in your hand?!  Pick up trash while you get some exercise and fresh air.  I was on a walk recently and realized there are way too many wrappers, bottles, and junk even on my local sidewalks.   A couple of years ago, my daughter and I did an impromptu Earth Day clean up on a nearby neighborhood trail, and it’s amazing how quickly we filled a trash bag!

Although we have to push back our Earth Day event, we still want to thank the Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy in Wisconsin for helping us plan our Earth Day event for 2020.  We look forward to participating when all this calms down and we’ll be sure to update the blog with photos and videos of the event.
