More than ever, over the past year, we've been constrained to our ever-exciting homes. I believe that we're all ready for some good news regarding an early start to spring, which would allow many of us to get back outside to enjoy warmer weather. However, that's up to Punxsutawney Phil and his shadow to decide — and his results are in!
Did the Groundhog See His Shadow?
The famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania saw his shadow early this morning. Unfortunately, this means he predicts six more weeks of winter. The good news is the groundhog is right only 39% of the time.
What Does Groundhog Day Mean?
While this silly means of forecasting has no science behind it, and it doesn't actually tell us the end of winter, it's a fun way for the people of Pennsylvania to celebrate. Traditionally dating back to 1841, if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If there is no shadow, then spring is on the way.
Would Phil Have Seen His Shadow at Your House?
We can make a little game for ourselves with our very own AcuRite Atlas™ wireless weather station, which reports direct sunlight measurements, UV intensity, and hours of daylight! If I had a pet groundhog, he definitely would have seen his shadow this morning, as shown in my charts and details in My AcuRite™.

What would the groundhog's weather prediction have been if he was at your house? What does your direct sunlight data show for sunrise this morning? If you don’t have a weather station with light measurement data, simply report on the sunshine or cloud cover you saw this morning in the comments below!
