We saw some exciting and active weather last month, with the end of the month going out with a bang! Rarely do we see thunderstorms out here the San Francisco Bay Area, with generally about one good storm per year that produces hail (my favorite!). We didn’t see hail this time, but May 30th was an exciting combination of thunderstorms with cloud-to-cloud lightning, periods of heavy rainfall, and strong downbursts. The screenshots below from My AcuRite show my wireless weather station, the Atlas with lightning detection, reported over 200 nearby lightning strikes that day, with 1.00 inches of rainfall.
Earlier in mid-May, mild rain showers came through with rainfall totals less than a tenth of an inch on May 11th-12th, and again on the 17th-18th. More significantly, was the extreme heat we experienced with some record-breaking early-season May temperatures: May 8th reached 97.8 degrees F, and May 26th reached 102.8 degrees F. These combined heatwaves allowed for seven days above 90 degrees F for May and broke some records at many NWS official weather stations around the Bay Area and Northern California.
Lastly, as we get into June, we can start to feel the longer days and shorter nights – mostly for me because it’s nearly impossible to get my young kids to sleep at their 8 o’clock bedtime when it’s still light outside! The measured light at the end of May was nearly 14.5 hours, and you can see in the graph, the daily weather trend is showing a gradual increase of measured light and light intensity every day as we approach the summer solstice on Saturday, June 20th. Do you have an Atlas weather station? Checkout your measured light and comment below on how many hours of daylight you’re getting!
