Have now used this product a number of times and find it very accurate. Will use it with full confidence from now on. The only feature not very useful is the remaining cook time. It isn't close until the meat is almost done.
First unit received did not work. Replacement came very fast and all features work. Have not used it for cooking yet. Will provide follow up review after using it.
I really like the design of this thermometer with remote but feel a huge improvement would be to change this to a dual thermal sensor. When smoking or cooking anything you also need to know the oven temp as well as the internal temp of the meat. My Maverick does both and if Acurite upgraded to do the same I'd buy this for sure! Has Acurite considered adding this important feature? You will have a real winner once you do this..
My 2 cents,,
The design of this product has absolutely no attention to water ingress, so, after a rain shower, and some time in a drwwar, the unit is destroyed.... it's meant for barbecue, and it does rain at a barbecue sometimes :-(
The device looks very well-built, so it was a real surprise to see that the internal design practically invites water to pool in the 'well' where the display is, and leak inside; additionally, there is no attempt to prevent water ingress at any of the controls, or the thermocouple jack.
Sad to see such a let-down in a product whose functionality is, otherwise, excellent.
I used this thermometer for a lot of applications -- it worked very well for alerting a pot about to come to a boil and helped me avoid may boil-overs, especially when milk is involved. I also used it a few times when grilling, and it worked well until it no longer worked at all. Now all it does is register a temp of 5C with the alarm going off. After wiggling the cable a couple of times, it started registering the temperature again, but only for about a minute and then it was back to the alarm and 5C temperature indication. Apparently, when used with a Weber kettle grill, if you put the lid across the thermocouple cable with no protection, it hoses the wires inside and renders the unit unusable. Now waiting for the thermocouple replacement to become available. Treat the thermocouple cable with EXTREME care, or you can be in the market for a replacement as well..
Once I managed to extricate the thermometer from its package, I used it to monitor a nice big steak for my mother and husband that I cooked on our charcoal grill. The steak came out perfect!
This thermometer takes all the stress out of cooking on the grill. Nothing worse than an over-cooked piece of meat.
It's easy to use and I recommend it for everyone.
Je capote encore. Fait du maudit bon rostbeef.
Enjoy your meal!
The only "downer" I noticed is that the "time to go" feature stayed blank until the meat was about 2 deg from target point, and the display jumped to 0.00
This thermometer / Timer and Pager is a great addition to my BBQ set up... Using with a Big Green Egg and it has posed no issues. The face is large and easy to read... Accurate so far.... I recommend this thermometer for BBQing...
I like that it works and it is accurate. I don't have to guess whether the meat is cooked to the right temperature. Being able to put into the oven is an excellent feature (don't have to open the oven and lose heat). Also, checking multiple pieces of meat to make sure they're done is easy and quick.
