PRO+ Upgrade for the 5-in-1 Weather Sensor
Includes: PRO+ weather sensor assembly, instruction manual
Warranty: Limited 1 year warranty
Very easy to change and upgrade the 5-1 weather station with this new style sensor. Happy that I have had this station for many years without any troubles.
The wind cups for my original unit were broken by a three limb. This replacement is a far better alternative to just replacing cups. Easy to install and provides more accurate data. I highly recommend!
I am familiar with this product as its my third (they only last 12-15 months before they stop working). Still, I don't mind the modest price and average install time. Perhaps it is too impractical to separate the temperature sensor from the wind sensors so the 5 in 1 can then be mounted in the shade. Anyway, the only frustrating part of the installation is that the 'clear day' button does not clear the Year to date rain received. So I had to push the 'clear all' button and then pour five gallons of water into the reservoir to get it to the 4.7in rain this year. That is because I did not take one battery out for the install, so erroneous readings were obtained. I thought the 'clear day' button would do that.
This upgrade is wonderful. works far better now.
I read others reviews when buying stuff and this upgrade does what everyone says. My single solar panel was causing my temp to run about 10-12 degrees hotter than it actually was. But with this upgrade and the two solar panels running the fan, it is just about spot on with my other outdoor temp sensors. Although the glue holding one of the panels in place was not doing its job when I received the unit, but with a little bonding glue and a small strip of duct tape, its staying where it belongs. And I too think that this upgrade should already be available with all new packaged systems.
Was very easy to do not much effort needed and it works flawlessly and seems to make the temperatures it reads more accurate since I live in Florida and there is a lot of sunshine!!
This up grade was a big help. Befor i was 10 deg. off when the sun was on the 5-1 but now it seems to be 2 to 3 deg. off i can live with that. This weather station has been vary helpful
working with noaa weather and having it on weatheruderground. Acu Rite has a good product and it doesn't break the bank. Thank You Acu Rite and keep up the good work.
It performs exactly as I hoped it would. I have set up a weather station and enjoy the higher accuracy it provides. We are located out in the middle of nowhere and many of our family and friends tune in to see what is happening weather wise at our place; as well as others around the area.
Good price, but very hard, if not impossible to remove old broken wind cups.
Very easy to replace / install.
Works very good.
Should be standard equipment.
It works good wasn't real hard to change over so all and was a good purchase and item for a easy upgrade
Product arrived promptly. Installation was not difficult but was not super easy. It was installed after dark. It took about half a day for the thing to come to life and talk to the hub. The system (5 in 1, hub and my AcuRite ) seem to work well. The main use of the hub is to monitor temperatures at points in an above ground cistern with Room Monitors with Liquid & Soil Temperature Sensors. The soil temperature monitors agree usually within 1 degree F with each other (There are 2 at the same spot)
The old single panel was always giving me a higher reading than the actual temp was by up to 10-12 degrees on hot days. Since installing the dual panel our readings are much closer to the official temps from the local weather lab and also from another outdoor thermometer that I have. From reading other reviews I think the company should consider making the dual panel a standard feature even if it means upping the price a little as it sure makes it more accurate.
Bought this upgrade as the sun does cause a problem in all temp sensors when mounted in a combination unit like this. So far it seems to work but will have to wait for the hot summer months.
I replaced my original 5-1 fan to the Pro 5-1. It was very easy to exchange the two parts. Took less than a half hour. I also found out that the original head fan wasn't working. I noticed that the new one has a lubrication point in it that the original didn't.
I received a 5-in-1 weather station as a gift about a year ago with the dual solar panels. The unit worked great for the first 10 months. Then, the fan failed in the weather station and the daytime temperatures started reading high with the sun shining on the unit. So, I purchased a replacement fan/solar sensor unit. It was easy to replace and corrected the high daytime temperature problem. I hope this one lasts a lot longer.
Had to replace the cups that were damaged by hail, so I decided to replace the whole head assembly since the old one (~ 2-3 years old) always seemed to give high temp readings whenever the sun was out especially at 6500 ft elevation. At first it didn't give any wind speed readings. I cleaned the inside of the bottom sensor unit and now it works great and seems to be giving more accurate temp. readings.
This is a great upgrade from the original.
BIG improvement over single solar panel. Acurite should replace all of the single panel sensors with the dual upgrade.
Sensor needed batteries and the cooling fan was getting noisy, so I decided to replace the upper wind cup and solar panels with cooling fan. I have had this unit for 5+ years and have found it to be very accurate and dependable. Lithium batteries are the way to go as this is the first time I have had to replace them. I am glad there is a provision to lube the wind cups now as my older unit was starting to get noisy. One change I would like to see is the indoor monitor having the capability of retaining past readings when changing batteries. All past rain measurements and settings are lost when doing a battery change. A cheap small wafer/car remote type battery installed would help hold previous settings.
Awesome upgrade from the original single solar pane, my original was ok except for some radio signal loss every couple of months, but,now after installing the upgraded dual solor panels (very easy swap out mind you!) I have had no issues with my unit. I now have a unit that is pretty much on target 24/7 at least for the last 6 months that I have owned it.
Overall, very pleased.
Install was easy, temp readings are much closer than the original "single" solar panel. Like everybody else, I wish it was standard issue on these products, do away with the single sensor and you'd have a much better product out of the box. I noticed when I took down my outdoor station it had what looked like acid rain eating through the solar panel and sides and top of the body, none in the rain cup though. I have it mounted 20' high so I know it's not hard water from the house. Over all I like the twin solar panels 100% better, thank you..
Nice idea that should be part of standard unit and not an upgrade. Even with this upgrade temp is still not accurate a lot of the time. Temp during sunny day can very from 2- 12 degrees to high. Unit needs a separate sensor to mount in the shade.
There is a noticeable temp improvement with this upgrade. The solar panels receive more sunlight with a longer duration of the day, thus helping the aspirator fan run longer and compensate for the heat buildup caused by sunlight exposure.
But, it appears the solution is the cause of the initial issue. That is, the solar panel powered fan concept for an enclosed thermometer system itself. Actual temps are supposed to be measured in the "open shade". If you site your sensor in the shade, then the fan is not going to run efficiently. If you site your sensor in the sun, then the fan runs good, but you're still going to have inaccurate temp readings. If you use a sunlight shield, then the fan is not going to run properly either. So, we need a solution for this.
First of all, batteries should only be used for backup and NOT for main power on the AcuRite units. I believe the best thing AcuRite could do is allow the user to opt-in for an external power source for the whole unit including the fan circuit. The units should also be capable of controlling the RPM's of the fan when experiencing an inaccurate temp hike. You could use a UV photodiode coupled with a photoresistor to do that - OR - start packaging units with a secondary remote thermometer that communicates with the main home sensor array. The remote thermometer would need to be sited in the shade at all times. The idea there is to tell the main home sensor, "Hey, I think you might be giving a bogus temp reading due to direct sunlight. Increase the RPM's of your fan please, then check with me in 2 minutes." So, either you govern it by extra internal electronic components, or extra external electronic components... take your pick.
This unit seems to be working perfectly. It was very easy to replace and I like that it actually has the ability to be serviced (lubricated). I do recommend that it be lubricated at the time of installation with a good all-weather graphite product. I was not sure what (if any) it might have had out of the box, so a little seemed like a good preventative maintenance procedure.
I purchased the 5-in 1 weather station 2 years ago and have constantly had excessive high temperature readings, usually 8 to 10 degrees above normal. I was planning on purchasing a new outside unit in hopes of correcting the problem when I found the 5-in-1 weather sensor for a fraction of the cost. I had checked my sensor and determined that the fan was not working. Not sure if it was the motor or the solar pane. I purchased the 5-in-1 weather sensor. When it arrived, I first checked it to make sure the fan was operating in full sun. I installed the new unit ( very simple ) and waited to see the results. After about a month now, with temperatures reaching into the upper 80's, the unit is consistently reading within 1 or 2 degrees of the other stations in my area, and that difference could very well be the difference of our locations.
I'm very satisfied with this upgrade and the new performance of my system. Acurite should include this with all of their new weather stations, since there are so many complaints about high readings related to the fan performance.
This PRO+ Upgrade for the 5-in-1 Weather Sensor has worked perfectly. The other dual solar panel gave me very high readings. This one matches the temperatures of other weather stations in the area. I have also use the single solar panel but this one is well worth having. I have had this new one up for three days.
Purchased as a replacement when the sensor fan motor went out after a year. Easy to replace and weather reporting to Wunderground back to normal! Took a little longer for shipping than I would have liked, so I would recommend asking for expedited shipping if you are in a rush to replace. Otherwise, great customer service for a great product!
We ordered the 01050C 5-in-1 and upgraded with this add-on 5N1DSSA because the 01050C alone was known to give excessively high readings. Now, after about 2 years, the cooling fan has stopped - we have been recording very overstated temperatures lately. Our disassembly and failure analysis show that corrosion broke the connection of the 2 solar panels to the circuitry, on the small circuit board that feeds the power to the fan motor. I was able to get it running again by bypassing the now-defunct 4.7 ohm chip resistor with a soldered wire, after examining the circuit (different board but similar very simple circuit using a 65E9 XC6206) of the original in-the-box single unit whose parts were not corroded.
Poor build quality I must say.
Made very little difference from the single solar panel unit in the temperature spike's when the suns out. Would not recommend upgrade!!!
Mom hooked me up with this weather station for my birthday! Thanks Mom! I couldn't be happier! I always wanted one of these advanced weather stations. So when l got it l read over everything and came to the site to get "recommended installation and locations" info. Then l saw where everyone was recommending this item for my unit and giving it high ratings. So l went out on a limb and bought it. Well, l'm glad l did! I had been comparing my temps with my older, less expensive weather monitor with the one solar panel sensor and they were relativity close but now with the dual solar panel the temps are considerably different! So making this purchase was worth it! If you have the single solar panel model or get a weather station with one, upgrade to this!!
I was getting booted from Weather Underground for a few hours every day because my temperature was rising faster than other stations in the neighborhood. The Pro Upgrade has solved this problem and reported temperatures are now much more accurate.
Ok so I originally got 01010W2 with the single solar panel. That thing read about 15 to 20 degrees high when in direct sun. The fan hardly moved even when I put a 1000 lumen flashlight directly on solar panel.. (a "real" 1000 lumen $95 flashlight, not cheap one).
So I ordered the upgrade at my own expense when Acurite was going to make me reset the batteries, try new batteries etc before they would send me out a dual solar panel unit.
She said that if my AA battery voltages were too high, that might effect the reading. I know that is complete BS.. Oh well.. So I just bought the thing myself.
I ordered the Aculink bridge and a color display at that time as well, so I am in this pretty deep now, spending a few hundred bucks.
So I get the new 5-in-1 and install it and I realize that the wind cups are not going around as much as the old ones were. I took it back apart and held them both up at the same time, (the original 1 solar panel sensor and the new dual solar panel sensor). Well at the same wind speed, the new wind cups were not going around as fast and then they would stop quicker too, and would not start up with same wind blowing. They were defective. I tried everything, expensive RC car bearing lube, etc.. I used to race RC cars and still fly RC helis and planes so I know all about these little bearings.. These bearings were terrible. The bearings were "crunching".. and causing drag. The unit was defective. The temperature seemed to work ok on that one though. You cannot replace bearing (or wind cups) without destroying the thing though.. Mine were stuck on tight and if I pulled any harder, they would have broken, so I wasn't going to try to fix it myself and void the warranty. I might have been able to buy really nice bearing that size and use them.
That is another problem, poor design. I should be able to easily remove the wind-cups from one unit and put the entire thing on another unit, or switch out the solar panels or the the motor/fan unit. But they purposefully make it so that you have to noticeably destroy the thing to accomplish that.
So Acurite gave me a label to send the thing back. Great.. more waiting.
So I finally get around to sending it back several days later and I cannot find the mailing label link in the email anymore. Am I going insane? I know I saw it a few days ago! I guess it expires if you don't use it right away, even though you have several days to send it in. Why? I have no idea. I call Aculink and ask where the label is and they explain that it disappears from the email if you don't use it right away. Uhh... Ok. Whatever.
They decide to take my word for it apparently and just send me out the second dual solar panel "pro" upgrade. Mind you, I paid out of pocket for the first one as original single panel one was worthless for temperature on hot days.
Ok so I get the second "pro" upgrade sensor and install it. Wind cups seem to work fine, or "ok". Not as sensitive as original wind cups on single solar panel sensor, but whatever. I have been up and down the ladder so many times, I was ok with that. So then some hot days come around with lots of sun.. rare for this time of year here in Upstate NY. So for a few days it seems to work just fine, I was relieved. It was 90- 93 degrees one day and it read the accurate temps. Great. I finally figure out how to start uploading my reading to the PWS network and WeatherUnderground, etc.. I'm happy at this point. My weather sensor temps and data are on the internet for all to see! Very cool!
Then all of the sudden a few days later on a hot day I see 102 on the display. Huh? It is 91 at most! Then it keeps climbing.. I turn off my program that is uploading my info to WeatherUnderground and PWS app on my iphone. They're gonna kick me off if I keep uploading these false high temp readings. All the other PWS in my area were reading around 86 to 96 at most, while mine kept climbing to 103, and "feels like" 106!! It was hot, but not that hot! So I climb the ladder in the hot sun, I uninstall the thing again, I take it apart and take the batteries out and check to see the fan is working, and it is.. I put it back together and the same day in same conditions it started working ok again. Hmm.. Weird.
So then today is another scorcher. Sept 8th and it is blasted freaking hot out there, and sunny. It's around 93, and I look at my display, and it reads 102! No, it is not 102. Again, it is hot, but not that hot. I imagine when it really is 102, this thing will say it is 120. Ri-freakin-diculous! After all that time, money, and energy spent, my readings are again completely worthless.
So I call Acurite and tell them what is going on. I even tell them I am thinking about purposely voiding my warranty, and hooking up my own solar panel (a big fat one!), and hooking up my own high speed fan. I could easily get this thing working.. well maybe not easily, but I could do it. It would void my warranty though.
I go through the procedure with sticking my ear up to the unit (8 feet off the ground, precariously perched on a step ladder on a hot windy day).. and I barely hear anything. Direct sun, almost the hottest and brightest it ever gets here, and the fan is either going very slowly, or not at all. I pointed it north and got it level with my iphone compass and level when installing it, So it is mounted properly. The sun is directly on the left solar panel, and the fan is barely moving, or if it is, it is not doing the job needed.
So then the Acurite guy tells me that it is possible I got a bad unit, with solar panel/ fan that is not working right because there was a bad batch or something. Hmm.. Ok. This is the 3rd one that is not working as advertised, and I paid for the upgrade with my own money, and I have a lot of money tied up in all this stuff at this point. He says a new batch is coming out later in the month, and that I will be getting a new unit from new batch sent out when they are available (just the upgrade, not an entire 5-in-1). The problem is that by that time, there will most certainly be no more very hot and very sunny days this year. It is very strange to have this many very hot and sunny days this late in the year already. So I am sure that I will not know if the new one works until next June or July, So that's kind of a problem.
Well, at least Acurite are standing behind their products, I will give them that. I think these things should be tested better though (or tested at all?).
It is a huge pain to keep installing these, and then uninstalling them, and then reinstalling them, sending them back, etc. They should just work, I mean they are pretty simple machines, and if designed and constructed properly, they should just work.
I will re-review the new unit (will be the 4th overall and 3rd "pro upgrade".. If the new one doesn't work, then they have some serious QC problems or serious design faults. I am really hoping the new one works right, but I may not know if it does or not until summer of 2016. It is like getting the air conditioning fixed in your car in January. Who knows if it works right until several months later.
Received the item well packed without damage. Instructions were quite easy to follow and the removal of the old/installing the new was rather quick and easy.
There is no comparison between the original solar panel and fan and this double duty one. Hot temperatures in the Colorado sunshine were registering more than 10 degrees higher than they should. Even after the install, it took overnight for the thermometer to reduce that temperature to a much more accurate one. Maybe the old system would work in cloudy areas but if you get hot sun and have the weather station exposed to get the wind speed, this upgrade is required. I wish I had knows to order the original station in the "Pro" version.
As I write this review it is 2:30 in the afternoon in Tempe (Phoenix) Arizona and the outside temperature is 110. My display shows 119 which is probably about 10 degrees less than without the two solar panels. It works perfectly after dark and on cooler days shows only a slight increase over the actual temperature. My last weather station had a remote temperature gauge that could be mounted in the shade, this would probably be a better option.
This should be standard equipment on the 5-in-1. I didn't know that there was this option as I bought my sensor at Costco. Now with the duel solar panels, the temp. is within 1 to 2 degrees of our Oregon Scientific Temp. gauge in direct sunlight. It was pretty easy to change, but you need a skinny screw driver to get down in the tiny holes. This one also comes with a port to lube the wind cups.
I think this should be a standard part on your weather stations. It works well and is a lot quieter than the original.
I was getting temperature readings that were over 10 degrees higher than actual. Weather Underground shut down my feed from the public due to inaccuracy. I had thought that being in South Florida where it's sunny all day the original panel would power the fan properly but apparently it did not. I sent the original unit back for repairs and still had high readings after it was 'repaired'. But now after installing this upgrade my readings are accurate. I'm not happy with having to pay $35 for the upgrade, I think it should be offered to customers as a 'recall' type of fix, but I am happy with the end results.
Needed to replace my original solar panel and wind cups after a hail storm. This new design solved the problem I was seeing in early morning and late afternoon with the temps being out of temp range of nearby weather stations and Weather Underground not displaying my weather station on their PWS map.
I had the previous version with only one solar panel. So far, it appears to keep a more accurate reading compared to my lacrosse, both wind and temperature wise. I believe when the summer time starts it'll probably keep a more accurate temperature, even with the sun directly on the unit, given that the fan is now more powerful. I was looking to replace the older version because the fans had been broken off by a hail storm. When I saw this one and it was compatible, I thought I'd make the change after reading the good reviews on it. Eventually, since I've had good luck with this one, I would like to purchase the model that connects to the internet.
The fan works much better (the original did not come on at all with out help when I removed to replace) the temperature seems to be about 3 degrees high on sunny days compared to local AG. Weather station about 2 miles away. Overcast days and at night they are almost identical. Great improvement.
I have had my 5-in-1 unit for a year now and though I faced the sensor toward the northwest to reduce the spikes in temperature readings in the late morning hours due to the solar panel not receiving enough sunlight to activate the solar-powered fan I decided to purchase the dual solar panel upgrade kit. It was easy enough to install though I recommend using a longer screwdriver for the removal and re-installation of the long screw where the mounting pole is inserted into the sensor unit. When installed I was able to face the sensor back to due south where it is supposed to be and have had not any problem whatsoever with any spiking of temperature readings at any time of the day. As a preventative measure I also replaced the batteries in the sensor unit. As I said in my original review of the 5-in-1 unit Acurite should consider making the upgrade kit a standard feature of the 5-in-1 unit.
Installation went pretty smoothly as did shipping and delivery. Only time will tell how close to accurate the temp will register in this very southern location. So far it seems to be within a couple degrees which is within the standard deviation. And this side of town generally has warmer temps than where weather stations have their sensors in the valley. I do think the price for it is a bit steep (1/3rd of what I paid for the whole 5 in 1 system). Although it really should have been free to fix the deficiency, a lower price would have been more fair.
Great product. It should be standard equipment on the 5 in 1. Had some difficulty getting it to link to my bridge. Once it was connected it has worked great. Much better temperature accuracy.......Thanks Acurite for making it possible to afford the products I have. I love the weather and of course Acurite.
...but as mentioned in other reviews, this product should be standard. The fan should be on battery backup, although the double solar panels keep the fan running better in lower light situations.
I'd like to write this review a year from now just to see how or if it has improved. The improvements look nice, sound nice, but only time will tell if they work nice. This is the second unit I have purchased (due to golf ball to tennis ball size hail). The wind cups did not hold up to large hail, but the again neither did my truck. This unit is great for daily planning of fishing charters in the Chesapeake Bay.
I think this is a great product, but it should be standard equipment on the 5 in 1. I had a little difficulty getting it to link to my bridge after installing, but once it was connected it has worked great. The temperature is much more accurate.
This is a great replacement for the existing wind vane and provides more accurate temperature readings (as stated many times before) but it should be standard equipment. It's ethically questionable that Acurite would sell a product with known deficiencies when they could resolve it for a few bucks more.
The installation video makes installing this a breeze.
I was skeptical this was going to make a difference, but it really does reduce the sunny day problems with higher readings than every other sensor in the neighborhood. I am impressed. This product is worth the money.
This should be sold on the new 5-in-1's being sold.
Works. Resolves temp spikes.
As I was researching the 5 in 1 weather station products it was apparent that users were disappointed with unacceptably inaccurate temperature measurements resulting from the stock solar fan. I never used it; I bought this when I bought my weather station and installed it before mounting the 5 in 1. In the heat of the day, the unit still reads a couple of degrees too high even with the upgrade, but it does an admirable job given the price.
The new panels fit on exactly as the directions stated, and the unit had linked up with inside unit before I made it in the house. I agree with other reviewers that this should standard on the 5 in 1.
My old anemometer part was starting to get stuck occasionally and causing low wind speed measurements to be inaccurate. There may have been a way to lubricate it, but I couldn't pass up on purchasing this add-on. The included instructions were easy to follow and included images. This add-on has a small screw on the side of the anemometer shaft which allows for simple lubrication.
While the main reason for my purchase is the anemometer, the extra solar panel will help will the Ambient Temp problems.
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase!
No problem installing did a low hum. reading for a couple of days but seems to be working OK now
I give the product 4 stars for working well so far. It has eliminated the temperature spikes I was getting in the early morning and late afternoon for about a month in the early summer and a month in late summer. I believe that I will still have to rotate the 5 in 1 twice a year though because in the Southwest the sun shifts too much from winter to summer and the sun is so intense but that is still much better than living with temperature spikes 2 months a year. I give the product 3 stars though for poorly attached solar panels. One of them is not well secured to the plastic unit. I contacted Acurite and they said they will replace it if it causes problems but they don't believe it will. I Hope not because I don't want to have the hassle of returning it and waiting for a replacement. I would recommend this to anyone who has temperature spikes as long as the panels are attached properly. They also added a lubrication port for lubing the winds cup shaft as needed which is a good thing to have access to.
I have had the dual cell installed from 01-01-2014,and I can tell that it is going to be a great improvement. I have had days in the low 80's and the tempura do not jump up as the sun sets in the evening. Last year I would see the temp jump up as much as 10deg. It looks as if that is a thing of the pass. Will update again later.
P.S. tonight it is going to be 30deg in North Carolina
IT WAS SO EASY THAT IT ONLY TOOK ABOUT TWENTY MINUTES TO PUT IT ON.
THE TEMPERATURE IS SO MUCH MORE ACCURATE NOW.
I recently replaced this part from the one-panel to the two-panel assembly. The unit is well made and easily serviceable. The problem on my unit was that the fan motor would not turn anymore, the contacts inside were used up. I only needed to replace the motor, not the whole assembly. Acurite should sell the motor (assembled with the connector) as a part, it would be less waste and less expensive.
As with the others it does make a difference in the direct Sun. Before the Sun would hit it from the South it would read a + 5 degrees now it reads correctly 95% of the time.
Each of the preceding reviews mentioned the same thing. either should have been on the product originally or it is replacing the wind cups that should not have broken. I agree with both counts. Especially the original placement of this new dual solar cell. I assume that this will be a permanent replacement in the future, assuming this I give you 5 stars for the improvement made to the product. I am happy with my 5 in 1 and the bridge. I see the bridge is now part of a package. I always choke alittle when I see things that I paid extra for included in the package. Oh well, the price of progress I guess.
This gives better and more accurate readings compared to the original unit. It should have been shipped with the 5 in 1 when I first purchased the product. The sensor strength signal is better. Either the old did not work properly from the beginning or the new upgrade resolves problems. Glad I purchased as I was about to find a different company's product.
While this is a nice easy add on, it really should be standard issue as it resolves the Ambient Temp issue in the sun. This is the third time I have had to replace the wind cup. should have been built A little stronger.
This is a good upgrade just to have I am not very sure let how well it will really work in summer and no snow. The only bad thing is it was not very easy to install because need a small tip screwdriver that was long after finding one it was easy to do. Last thing is for the price of the shipping it is very slow took 8 days from order from when I got it.
This was a replacement for a broken wind vane, this is the third. this is a nice upgrade with 2 solar panels it took care of the temp difference from the sensor in the front yard and the roof of 3 to 5 degrees
This is an excellent product but should have come on the unit in the first place!
While this is a nice easy add on, it really should be standard issue as it resolves the Ambient Temp issue in the sun. Something I never experienced, but read about.
